It is a common and treatable psychiatric disorder. It's life time prevalence is 15-20%.
It is little more common in females than males and Though it is commonly seen in middle age, childhood and elderly depression isn't uncommon.
Symptoms:
Sadness of mood
Lack of interest.
Hopelessness
Worthlessness
Excessive guilt feeling
Decreased confidence
Low self esteem
Lack of concentration leading to forgetfulness
Disturbed sleep and appetite.
Increased irritability
Fearfulness
Excessive worrying
Suicidal ideas and if not treated patient may attempt suicide.
Duration of symptoms should be minimum two weeks.
And there should be social and occupational impairment.
It's very important to depression as mortality due to suicide is almost 15%.
Hence please don't ignore depression and get it treated.
